Welcome to Casual Inference, a newsletter by me, Seong Hyun. I started Casual Inference to share my thoughts and opinions about AI, machine learning, data science, tech startups, data teams and careers, with occasional musings on random topics that come to my mind. This newsletter contains the lessons I’ve learned and the advice I found myself giving multiple times throughout my career as a data scientist, engineer, manager, and even a founder. I’ve made quite a few mistakes, and I’ll write them as often as I can so you don’t have to make the same ones. It’s my hope that you find them valuable!
About me 🚀
I’m a full-stack data scientist and machine learning engineer, currently working as the Staff Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer at CookUnity where I build and lead the data science and machine learning function from the ground up. Previously, I was the Director of Data Science and Machine Learning at Daily Harvest, building and leading the team responsible for developing and improving the core data and algorithmic capabilities. Prior to that, I worked at startups across different industries such as Toast, Zagster, and Plated doing everything related to data and engineering during their high-growth, pre-exit years as a founding member of the data science and machine learning team. I co-founded a couple of startups along the way as well.
My experience lies at the intersection of direct-to-consumer (DTC) subscription and marketplace, omni-channel retail, restaurant and food industries. I studied statistics, economics, and computer science at Harvard and Yale. I advised a couple of early stage startups on AI, machine learning and data science, helping them with key hiring and laying the data and engineering foundation for future innovation and growth. I was born in Seoul, Korea but majorly raised in Michigan. I like all kinds of Korean and Japanese foods, but I try to avoid cilantro as much as I can. I like learning and trying new things, and exploring social phenomena using mathematical and statistical models. I strive to become a better version of myself.
